DWSON: “A TAPE FOR YOU”

Cape Town deep-house producer/DJ DWSON shares his thoughts in the wake of his 3rd studio album, “A Tape For You.”

“I’m very selective when it comes to features, and I’m a genuine fan of each artist I feature. Atjazz has had a huge impact in our deep house scene over the years here in SA as well as our very own Jullian Gomes… I remember going to almost each show I could, dating back to when I was a lot younger & slightly under-age getting into specific clubs and house events, doing anything to get my deep house fix… Days going back to the Deluxe era, wooden floors, music thumping, smiles all around when house wasn’t as huge in SA as it is now. So yeah, these features are a little more personal and mean a lot to me. Then we’ve got Hyenah, SGVO, Apple Gule & Ed-Ward who are outstanding artists/producers, wizards in their lane who I admire and knew would fit this album effortlessly. As a producer working on an album there’s specific artists you know could be a good fit for a feature so each person I had in mind made sense for the particular song, whether it’s sonics or style or vocals I knew it would come together as I envisioned it so each feature on the project was organic and complimented the album nicely.”

ON “SILENCE”

“I remember coming up with the main melody for our song “The Silence” as I was about to go to bed. I made a little voice note, opened it up in the morning, created a project in Ableton, played & recorded the melody… Started adding drums , percussions , added keys and as I was half way through thinking about a good fit — the first artist that came to mind was Hyenah. After sending a demo, he loved it, sent the instrumental to Apple Gule who graced us with a beautiful vocal, and we kept working on it till we were all satisfied.”
