BALLANTINE’S TRUE MUSIC 2023

a history of south african dance

Since the stretching of the first animal skin drums, Africa has had an unbreakable connection with the sound known to South Africa as “isigubhu.” As the cradle of humankind, it’s no surprise that this visionary place has managed to harness the power of sound in a way that leaves generations of people in complete awe. From the sacred to the secular, music has been an integral part of the African way, and in most recent times the world’s attention has become fixated on the myriad sounds echoing from the south.

PLATOON AFRICA

PLATOON is a platform for fearless creatives.

SUN EL MUSICIAN: TO THE WORLD AND BEYOND

In 2020, whilst working with Platoon, I was tasked with enriching the artist’s conceptual identities and individual sets for Sun El Musician’s To The World And Beyond virtual album launch. Using Zulu folklore, Afro-astronomy and various African ethno-mythologies, I paired each artist with an entity that embodied their characteristics. Unique archetypes were carefully crafted to define the look, style and performance for each artist and their corresponding environment; Each artist received a detailed briefing document, with their planet, their song and its relative position in the TTWB journey. For example: Venus, the “Little Drinker of Sweet Milk,” guides our Sun across the sky, personified by Ami Faku. Or, in another instance, The Moon, a literal mirror of the Sun, female juxtaposing male, is represented by Azana; in many African traditions the markings on the Moon are said to resemble a figure carrying a bundle of sticks, which you can see burning within the Uhuru environment. Details went as far as the individual colour palettes so that costume and styling could augment the environment.

This year, the project has been nominated for Best Live Audio Visual Recording of the Year at the South African Music Awards. In case you missed it, read all about the project and the amazing teams involved below where you can also catch the production itself. Congrats to everyone involved on this giant leap! 🚀
